List of the Ten Commandments

Below is a list of the Ten Commandments from the King James Bible and is the first time they are found in the Bible. There are some uneducated Christians who call the Ten Commandments the Law of Moses but this law has nothing to do with him. This law is from God, was first written by God and was first spoken by God. Take note of Exodus 20:1, 22 that precedes the Decalogue that says “And God spake all these words, saying” as well as verse 22 after they were spoken. There are also many Christians who confuse the Decalogue from God which is clearly an eternal moral law, with the Law of Moses which is a temporary Jewish law that was practiced because of sin until Christ died on the cross.

Exodus 31:18And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.
Exodus 32:16And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.

The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:2-17 KJV)

1 “I am the LORD your God, which have brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me.

2 “You shall not make unto you any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: You shall not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my Commandments.

3 “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

4 “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shall you labour, and do all your work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD your God: in it you shall not do any work, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger that is within your gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

5 “Honour your father and your mother: that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God giveth you.

 6 “You shall not kill.

7 “You shall not commit adultery.

 8 “You shall not steal.

9 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.

10 “You shall not covet your neighbour's house, you shall not covet your neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is your neighbour's.”

Comparison of the Ten Commandments

Below you can find a comparison of the first and second readings of the Ten Commandments from the King James Bible in modernized English. The first is as found in Exodus 20:2-17 and was personally spoken by God and written by the finger of God. The second is found in Deuteronomy 5:6-21 which was written and spoken by Moses. Deuteronomy means “second law” and is the last of the five books that is also known as the Pentateuch or Torah.

These first five books called “Torah” by the Jews means “teaching,” “instruction,” or “law.” However, it can mean different things in different contexts and can also be used to refer to the entire Jewish bible which is called the Old Testament by non-Jews. There is no Old Testament to the Jews and the books that Christians call the New Testament are not part of Jewish scripture. The Torah primarily refers to the first section of the Tanakh which is an acronym that identifies the Hebrew Bible and is based on the initial Hebrew letters of each of the text's three parts. The first five books of the Tanakh are Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.

Below is a list of the books of the written Torah in the order they appear in Jewish translations. The Hebrew names of the first five books are taken from the first few words of each book. The text in each book is similar in Jewish translations as what you see in Christian bibles, although there are some slight occasional differences in the numbering of verses and some significant differences in the translations.

Torah (The Law):
Bereishith (In the beginning...) - Genesis
Shemoth (The names...) - Exodus
Vayiqra (And He called...) - Leviticus
Bamidbar (In the wilderness...) - Numbers
Devarim (The words...) - Deuteronomy

The Hebrew and Jewish Ten Commandments

The Ten Commandments are a special set of spiritual laws to the Jews that the LORD Himself wrote on two stone tablets that Moses brought down from Mount Sinai. They are usually referred to as “Aseret haDiberot,” In rabbinical writings and in the Scriptures they are called the “aseret hadevarim,” the “ten words” or “ten utterances.” They are called the Decalogue in Christian theological writings which is derived from the Greek name “dekalogos” (ten statements) found in the Septuagint (Exodus 34:28, Deuteronomy 10:4) which is the Greek translation of the Hebrew name.

The Torah has a total of 613 commandments to the Jews which also includes the ten from the Decalogue. Traditional Rabbinical belief is that these commandments apply solely to the Jewish people while in fact some of them did though only to the cross. I have heard today many use this information as a means of trying to avoid the Decalogue. Some erroneously state that if you obey the Decalogue then you have to obey all 613 laws which is utter nonsense and those quoting this should be ashamed.

A large percentage of these laws were instituted because of sin (example Passover, Day of Atonement) and hence were only for the Jews because the Gospel did not go to the Gentiles until 3.5 years after the law of sacrifices was abolished at the cross by Christ. The Ten Commandments on the other hand are obviously a standalone law for all mankind. They were written down by the finger of God, they were personally spoken by God, and they were stored on the inside of the Ark of the Covenant under the mercy seat, which represented the very presence of God Himself. There can be no doubt that the Ten Commandments are extremely important to God. Most of the other 603 laws ended with Christ for obvious reasons but not so with the Ten Commandments. An examples of some of these other laws are unclean foods, laws to prevent the spread of leprosy, mold in houses and a woman being unclean once a month. It is obviously not wisdom to compare laws to stop the spread of disease for example to this magnificent law that God wrote in stone!

2 I am GOD, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of a life of slavery.

2 “I am the Lord your God. I brought you out of Egypt. That is the land where you were slaves.

2 “I am Jehovah your God who liberated you from your slavery in Egypt.

3 “You must not have any other gods except me.

3 No other gods, only me.

3 “Do not put any other gods in place of me.

3 “You may worship no other god than me.

4 “You must not make for yourselves any idols. Don't make something that looks like anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the water below the land.

4 No carved gods of any size, shape, or form of anything whatever, whether of things that fly or walk or swim.

4 “Do not make statues of gods that look like anything in the sky or on the earth or in the waters.

4 “You shall not make yourselves any idols: no images of animals, birds, or fish.

5 You must not worship or serve any idol. This is because I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God. A person may sin against me and hate me. I will punish his children, even his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

5 Don't bow down to them and don't serve them because I am GOD, your God, and I'm a most jealous God, punishing the children for any sins their parents pass on to them to the third, and yes, even to the fourth generation of those who hate me.

5 Do not bow down to them or worship them. I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God. I punish the children for the sin of their parents. I punish the grandchildren and great grandchildren of those who hate me.

5 You must never bow or worship it in any way; for I, the Lord your God, am very possessive. I will not share your affection with any other god! “And when I punish people for their sins, the punishment continues upon the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of those who hate me;

6 But I will be very kind to thousands who love me and obey my commands.

6 But I'm unswervingly loyal to the thousands who love me and keep my commandments.

6 But for all time to come I show love to all those who love me and keep my commandments.

6 but I lavish my love upon thousands of those who love me and obey my commandments.

7 No using the name of GOD, your God, in curses or silly banter; GOD won't put up with the irreverant use of his name.

7 “Do not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will find guilty anyone who misuses his name.

8 “Remember to observe the Sabbath as a holy day.

9 You may work and get everything done during six days each week.

9 Work six days and do everything you need to do.

9 Do all of your work in six days.

9 Six days a week are for your daily duties and your regular work,

10 But the seventh day is a day of rest to honor the Lord your God. On that day no one may do any work: not you, your son or daughter, or your men or women slaves. Neither your animals nor the foreigners living in your cities may work.

10 But the seventh day is a Sabbath to GOD, your God. Don't do any work--not you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your servant, nor your maid, nor your animals, not even the foreign guest visiting in your town.

10 But the seventh day is a Sabbath in honor of the Lord your God. Do not do any work on that day. The same command applies to your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and your animals. It also applies to any outsiders who live in your cities.

10 but the seventh day is a day of Sabbath rest before the Lord your God. On that day you are to do no work of any kind, nor shall your son, daughter, or slaves-- whether men or women-- or your cattle or your house guests.

11 The reason is that in six days the Lord made everything. He made the sky, earth, sea and everything in them. And on the seventh day, he rested. So the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

11 For in six days GOD made Heaven, Earth, and sea, and everything in them; he rested on the seventh day. Therefore GOD blessed the Sabbath day; he set it apart as a holy day.

11 In six days I made the heavens and the earth. I made the oceans and everything in them. But I rested on the seventh day. So I blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

11 For in six days the Lord made the heaven, earth, and sea, and everything in them, and rested the seventh day; so he blessed the Sabbath day and set it aside for rest.

11 for six days hath Jehovah made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and resteth in the seventh day; therefore hath Jehovah blessed the Sabbath-day, and doth sanctify it.

11 for in six days Yahweh made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day; therefore Yahweh blessed the Sabbath day, and made it holy.

1 And God spake all these words, saying,

1 And God said all these words:

1 Then God said all these words:

1 And God spoke all these words, saying,

1st

2 I am Jehovah thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

2 I am the Lord your God who took you out of the land of Egypt, out of the prison-house.

2 “I am ADONAI your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the abode of slavery.

2 I am Jehovah thy God, who have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

2nd

3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

3 You are to have no other gods but me.

3 “You are to have no other gods before me.

3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

4 Thou shalt not make unto thee a graven image, nor any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

4 You are not to make an image or picture of anything in heaven or on the earth or in the waters under the earth:

4 You are not to make for yourselves a carved image or any kind of representation of anything in heaven above, on the earth beneath or in the water below the shoreline.

4 Thou shalt not make thyself any graven image, or any form of what is in the heavens above, or what is in the earth beneath, or what is in the waters under the earth:

5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them, for I Jehovah thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation of them that hate me,

5 You may not go down on your faces before them or give them worship: for I, the Lord your God, am a God who will not give his honour to another; and I will send punishment on the children for the wrongdoing of their fathers, to the third and fourth generation of my haters;

5 You are not to bow down to them or serve them; for I, ADONAI your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sins of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,

5 thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them; for I, Jehovah thy God, am a jealous *God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the sons to the third and to the fourth generation of them that hate me,

6 and showing loving kindness unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.

6 And I will have mercy through a thousand generations on those who have love for me and keep my laws.

6 but displaying grace to the thousandth generation of those who love me and obey my mitzvot.

6 and shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.

3rd

7 Thou shalt not take the name of Jehovah thy God in vain; for Jehovah will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

7 You are not to make use of the name of the Lord your God for an evil purpose; whoever takes the Lord's name on his lips for an evil purpose will be judged a sinner by the Lord.

7 “You are not to use lightly the name of ADONAI your God, because ADONAI will not leave unpunished someone who uses his name lightly.

7 Thou shalt not idly utter the name of Jehovah thy God; for Jehovah will not hold him guiltless that idly uttereth his name.

8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

8 Keep in memory the Sabbath and let it be a holy day.

8 “Remember the day, Shabbat, to set it apart for God.

8 Remember the sabbath day to hallow it.

9 Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work;

9 On six days do all your work:

9 You have six days to labor and do all your work,

9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work;

10 but the seventh day is a sabbath unto Jehovah thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

10 But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; on that day you are to do no work, you or your son or your daughter, your man-servant or your woman-servant, your cattle or the man from a strange country who is living among you:

10 but the seventh day is a Shabbat for ADONAI your God. On it, you are not to do any kind of work -not you, your son or your daughter, not your male or female slave, not your livestock, and not the foreigner staying with you inside the gates to your property.

10 but the seventh day is the sabbath of Jehovah thy God: thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy bondman, nor thy handmaid, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates.

11 for in six days Jehovah made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore Jehovah blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and the sea, and everything in them, and he took his rest on the seventh day: for this reason the Lord has given his blessing to the seventh day and made it holy.

11 For in six days, ADONAI made heaven and earth, the sea and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. This is why ADONAI blessed the day, Shabbat, and separated it for himself.

11 For in six days Jehovah made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore Jehovah blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbor's.

17 Let not your desire be turned to your neighbour's house, or his wife or his man-servant or his woman-servant or his ox or his ass or anything which is his.

17 “Do not covet your neighbor's house; do not covet your neighbor's wife, his male or female slave, his ox, his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

17 Thou shalt not desire thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not desire thy neighbour's wife, nor his bondman, nor his handmaid, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbour's.
